Millars are very proud of this particular project because this was a fitout within an iconic, historically significant building. The Art Deco building in Stout Street has been a prominent Wellington landmark since it was first built in 1939. The New Zealand Defence Force was previously housed in the building. This was no ordinary fitout. The resulting challenges were complex and presented major constraints as all the work undertaken had to recognise the architectural significance of the building and fuse that with the need to provide a contemporary work environment for MBIE.
The work synthesised old with new and recognised the particular heritage features of the building. The project showcases the best of technology, products and materials that allow such features as energy efficient light fittings and wireless emergency lighting monitoring. The building won Gold in the Restoration category for the 2015 Commercial Projects Awards.
